Lee Grady Newsletters - Fire In My Bones

Last week Ted Haggard's wife, Gayle, dared to defy the high priestess of America's new morality.

Last week former Colorado pastor Ted Haggard hit the talk show circuit to promote the new HBO documentary about his fall from grace, The Trials of Ted Haggard. I'll admit I wasn't too excited about Haggard going public with the story of his relationship with a male prostitute, but there was a bright spot amid the awkward interviews. When Ted and his wife, Gayle, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show Jan. 28, Gayle dared to defy Oprah and her audience.

Oprah tried her best to pin Ted down and get him to admit he is a homosexual. Ted balked, saying that his sexuality is complicated. He explained that he had sexual experiences in the seventh grade that confused him. He spoke of sexual impulses that he struggled with but didn't act on until he hit 50.

"Oprah is the closest thing we have to a high priestess of America's new morality, and she seems obligated to push the politically correct idea that it's OK to be gay.”
Oprah told Ted, who is now 52, that he should just accept his "identity" rather than hiding it or running from it. Then Gayle, who has raised five kids and knows a lot about discipline, struck a nerve. She told Oprah that just because a person has certain inclinations doesn't mean he has to act on them.

Oprah got upset at that point. She even got out of her chair and said to Gayle: "That's where I disagree with you"-and her audience cheered. (I couldn't help but wonder if they had been cued.)

I was cheering for Gayle-not just because she has modeled Christian forgiveness during this embarrassing scandal but also because she clearly articulated the gospel during the interview. She stuck her neck out and defied the false religion of our times.

Oprah is the closest thing we have to a high priestess of America's new morality, and she seems obligated to push the politically correct idea that it's OK to be gay. She is paid a lot of money to promote this agenda, and she's good at it. She is articulate in her arguments and velvety smooth in her affirmation. Just come to Oprah, all you who are weary and burdened, and she will console you.

Oprah's feel-good doctrine is the same one adopted in the last 30 years by mainstream psychologists, Hollywood producers, gay rights organizations and some mainline churches. It basically says that if a person struggles with any level of same-sex attraction, they shouldn't fight the urges or label this a sin or a sexual disorder. They should simply accept their gayness, celebrate their new sexual identity and then hop in bed with whomever they please (unless of course they want to settle down into a same-sex marriage, which all state governments should legalize).

This "just accept who you are" argument certainly doesn't make sense for other categories of sinful behavior or emotional dysfunction. Consider these examples:

* I've prayed with countless people who struggle with addictions to alcohol, marijuana or prescription drugs. In most cases they were using the substances to numb their emotional pain and they hated their condition. When they received prayer ministry and counseling they found the grace to break free from these addictions. Can you imagine a counselor telling these people: "Why fight it? God gave you an addictive personality! Embrace it!"

* I know several single straight guys who struggle to stay sexually pure. They want to honor God and save sex for marriage, but sometimes they give in to the temptations of pornography or they cross barriers they shouldn't when they're dating. If I embrace Oprah's philosophy, I should just tell my friends to accept these temptations as their "identity"-as in, "Go ahead, God created you to be a fornicator! Let your hormones control you!"

* This week I met a man who spent more than 10 years in prison and is officially classified as a sex offender in police records. He found Christ during his first year of incarceration, and today he is a strong Christian. He has been out of prison for 10 years, and has had no further criminal incidents, yet he occasionally struggles with lustful thoughts. Should I tell him to stop trying so hard and just accept perversion as a way of life?

It would be absurd to discourage these people from seeking change. The very essence of the gospel is that Christ gives us the power to live a holy life. We are helpless to overcome sinful urges on our own, but when we have the presence of Jesus in our lives we discover the truth of Romans 6:14: "Sin shall not be master over you (NASB)."

God does not want us to stay the way we are! The apostle Paul told the Corinthians: "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come" (2 Cor. 5:17). That is the hallmark of genuine Christianity.

The issue on the table in this debate is whether homosexuality is (1) a sinful condition that can be overcome by the grace of God; or (2) an inborn genetic quality that should be accepted like skin color or a personality trait. Oprah and the majority of the mainstream media today are obviously pushing the second viewpoint. "Sin" is not in their vocabulary.

We cannot be silent while this debate rages. Let's tell our culture that Jesus Christ's amazing grace has the power to transform people whether they are gay or straight or anything in between.

J. Ang and the boys weren't able to come with me this year, so I decided to take a walk. There is just something about walking alone on the beach that washes away the cares of the world. Calendars and alarms are silent and for just a moment, the entire world seems to stand still.

As I began walking past the lighthouse and towards the bird sanctuary (a nice spot with no houses or people), I began to notice a large number of jellyfish washed up on the shore. Feared and respected in the water, these creatures were little more than a blob of goo lying helplessly at the water's edge. As I looked at them, I couldn't help but think about how much our spiritual lives mimic that of these grand creatures. When we are where we are suppose to be, we are beautiful and respected by all that are around us. Following only the current of the spirit as it gently leads us along and reflecting His light to those all around. . .but what happens when we leave the place we are intended? We are useless, ugly and disgusting to all who look at us. We are no more revered, but looked at in shame.

Where are you living right now? Are you in the will of God, following the guidance of the spirit or lying on the shore? Think about it and let the tides of His love bring you back to His will.

Until...

Shawn

Going Through The Motions

Sometimes a song just hits you in a way that takes your breath. I have heard this song on the radio so many times, but this time it got my attention. How often do we just go busy with life - or even serving God that we forget what it's all about. We don't take time to worship God because we are so busy doing the stuff that has to be done, but what if. . .what if we gave Him everything instead of doing what was expected? What if we totally sold out to God instead of just doing something because we "have to"? What if our lives really did revolve around God and not just service to the church? What if our motivation for serving was really so that God woud be uplifted, not ourselves?

Find a quiet place and a time when you can sit down undisturbed for 4 minutes to watch this awesome video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dva6-Yu3zkI&feature=channel

Media Shout V4

For those of you using Windows systems in your projection ministries, Media Shout Version 4 has now been released. The new version appears to be pretty cool. I have used pretty much every projection software on the market and have leaned in the direction of Media Shout for gigs over the past few years, including the GEORGIA MOUNTAIN PASSION PLAY.

At first glance I see some things I like - such as the ability to project two different feeds, one for the congregation and one for the choir (with no pretty backgrounds). For those of you using confidence monitors, this is a NICE addition.

I also found that the new interface appears to be much more user friendly. I found some of the earlier versions of the software to be difficult to use. While V3 was a huge improvement, I believe that V4 really takes the software to a new level. I think everyone will be pretty impressed. I have been so overwhelmed with work this year that I barely had time to complete the video for the Georgia Mountain Passion Play. Now that we are starting to see a slight break in activities, I felt it was time to deal with the decline in hits on our web page.

Since our last update, our numbers have steadily declined in several target user groups. I believe a great deal of the decline has to do with the difficulty that slower connections have in loading a Flash site, and the inability to easily maintain the site in that format. For these reasons, we have decided to downgrade the site back into an HTML format. Over the past couple of decades, I have watched as Halloween and Christmas have slowly merged together, all but obliterating this important holiday. It brings in almost no revenue for stores and asks for nothing more than a thankful heart.

We live in a world where we expect perfection from service workers, employers, employees, - even Pastors. Nothing is ever good enough for us and we feel like we have done a great deed if we don't complain about the services that we receive - sometimes even tossing a dollar their way to ease our guilt.

We are never satisfied with the home we live in, the car we drive, the job we work in or the money we make. We believe we deserve more and better than everyone else. We spend our lives trying to be better and have more than the people around us.

So why is Thanksgiving so important? The message of this simple holiday is to remind us that we have more than we deserve and that many people aren't as fortunate as we are. It is SO important, if but one day each year, we remember to thank God for his blessing - to thank those that serve us in their jobs. To enjoy family and friends without trying to outdo each other.

Give thanks!! Spend some time this weekend giving God the glory He deserves.

Shawn

Blairsville Judgement House 2008

One Voice Ministries is pleased to announce our participation in the 2008 Judgement House at FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF BLAIRSVILLE on Oct. 23-25. As our budget has tightened, it seems that every added expense possible has hit - vehicle repairs, medical bills, a baby on the way, etc. As a budget counselor, one would think I should be concerned, but the truth is - I have had a peace that I can't explain and my mind keeps going back to Phillipians 4:6. It says "Be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known."

Be careful (full of care) for nothing. In modern terms that simply means "chill" or "don't get stressed out over anything".

By prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be known. Basically, this is saying that you should thankfully pray and let God know what you are in need of.

So if you put it all together, it says something to the effect of : Chill out and let God be God. Just tell him what you need and be thankful for what he gives (and has given) you.

I know times are rough, but keep your head up and remember that God is in control.

Shawn

Another baby on the way

Angela and I are excited to announce that we are expecting our third child in May of 2009. Instead of preaching or singing, I felt that God wanted me to lead a praise and worship service, utilizing scripture between the praises to minister to the congregation. I wasn't sure how this would be received, but I have to admit that the feedback from the church has been very positive and I hope to be able to follow in this path again in the future.

God bless,

Shawn

Are You Ready?

I have watched this video several times over the past couple of years and have to admit that every time I watch it I am caught off guard. I believe that a great number of churchgoers are going to be the same way. . . they will know what's coming, yet they will be caught off guard as the trumpet sounds. Are you ready??

Cardboard Testimonies

I thought you might enjoy this video. As you can imagine, I have dealt with a hundreds of people in need during my life, however, I must report that I have never seen anything like what I have witnessed in our small community over the past few months. People who have worked hard their entire life, some making a great deal of money for years, have now found themselves in a severe financial state. With the failing U.S. economy, even retirees are starting to find themselves looking for non-existent work.

These economic woes have unfortunately started to work their way into congregations across our nation. Not only is this effecting the way churches assist families in need, it is starting to effect how we minister. As I have started watching churches throughout our area start cutting back on outreach programs in an attempt to continue operations, my heart breaks. While I understand that less money coming in means that a tithe will be less, we are finding that people are not giving at all due to decreased wages . . many times while refusing to reduce other household costs (cable, internet, etc.).

My plea to you is to prayerfully sit down and pray over your household budget, asking God to lead you in what items you can cut without reducing your giving below what God asks of you. Our main priority in life is to minister. When we don't give, we hinder the ministry of our churches in reaching lost souls for our Lord. I am not asking for a donation to our ministry, but rather ask that you join MY family in keeping our priorities in order during this tough time in our nation's history.

In Christ,

Shawn Howell

Another Milestone

One Voice Ministries is pleased to announce that we have broken yet another milestone this month with over 62,230 visitors to www.ovmonline.com. As I began thinking about what to write in this newsletter, I looked back to my 2007 New Year post and couldn't believe how far we had come.

Last year Angela we faced a great decision. Angela was working as the Administrator of a local hospice company. Her work had her away from home most of the time to the point that the boys and myself rarely saw her. She missed Christmas and New Year, worked late and left early. We knew this wasn't the life that God wanted, but were greatly afraid of how we would be able to afford to pay for our home, food, utilities, etc.

Shortly after the new year (07), we both felt God leading Angela to leave her job. We trimmed our budget to the bone for a few months, then God began rewarding our obedience as I just can't explain. Through this experience we have really learned that God is our provider. We never went bankrupt, we never went hungry. Sure we had to sacrifice some things, but what we mostly found is that the more money we had, the more money we wasted . . and the less money we have, the more we depend on God.

We have come a long way spiritually this year, and our goal for this coming year is to be a great deal closer to God at this time next year. I hope you will join us on this journey.

Until next time,
~Shawn

We Are The Reason For The Season

As we look around us this time of year, we are more than likely going to run into some bumper stickers, T-shirts or signs that say "Jesus is the Reason for the Season". While this goes a long way to keep us focused on the true meaning of Christmas, something is missing. Let's go a little deeper in thought.

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In order for Him to Die as a man, He first had to Born as one. So basically, His birth is the beginning of His plan to bring us salvation. If Christmas is a celebration of this time, the true reason for Christmas must be the same as the reason that He came - US.

While we celebrate the birth of our Lord this year, I ask that you take time to think about all that Christ gave up and took upon Himself as HE came to to save US.

Have a great Christmas.

~ Shawn

Fruits of the Spirit

Galations 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is:

LOVE (Agape) unconditional love, forgiving love, heart of giving, serving and helping.

JOY the word this comes from “Carav” (almost implies a joy that is contagious)

PEACE tranquility, exemption from rage & war, harmony, the tranquil state of a soul assured of salvation, Content with the lot or calling God has given you in life

LONGSUFFERING patience, endurance, perseverance, slow to avenge

GENTLENESS  moral goodness, integrity, kindnessgoodness

GOODNESS uprightness of heart and mind faith

FAITH conviction of the truth, trusting God, the ability to be relied on by God

MEEKNESS the act of being gentle

TEMPERANCE   self control

against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified (driven stakes into) the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It all falls back on the basics. If you really want to get closer to God, this is where it begins:

PRAY
Luke 11:1 (and following)
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

We have a bad habit of just handing God our wish list. Give me this, give me that, take care of this, etc. we have forgotten the basics of prayerWorship & acknowledge Him

Ask for his leadership and guidance in life.

Ask Him to meet your personal needs

Pray for others

Worship & acknowledge Him

Luke 11
10 For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened.

Matthew 21:22
And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

1. You should set aside a special time and place to pray
2. You should also live in a state of prayer

1 Thes 5
17 Pray without ceasing
To me, this verse makes me think of internet connections. Some of you may have a dialup account. This means you must connect every time you want to get online. Others of you have DSL or broadband. With broadband, you are always connected. You may not always be using the connection, but the channel is always open.

STUDY THE SCRIPTURES
2 Timothy 2
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be
shamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

1. The more you stick to the basics of your spiritual life, the stronger your faith will become. The stronger your faith, the weaker the lure of sin will become in your life. A former Pastor of mine once put it this way. "When the desires of your heart become the desires of HIS heart, they will be fulfilled.". What an awesome statement.

Before we go on, lets look at this in a couple of other versions.

Amplified Version

16 But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God).Complete Jewish Bible16 What I am saying is this: run your lives by the Spirit. Then you will not do what your old nature wants.

This clarifies the meaning of this scripture a great deal more to me by expanding it to it's fullest. . a habitual walk in the spirit - constantly seeking his will, allowing him to control us, allowing him to guide us. .

The Complete Jewish Bible is another version that stuck out to me on this verse. This time, not by expanding, but by simply making a blunt statement.

Complete Jewish Bible
16 What I am saying is this: run your lives by the Spirit. Then you will not do what your old nature wants.

Let's go on.

Gal. 5 (KJV)
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;

I'm going to break these down by the meaning of their original root word. It really brings the scripture to life.

Adultery
Sexual activity between a married person with someone other than their spouse.

Fornication
From "Porneiva” meaning illicit sex, fornication, homosexuality, beastiality, incest, and even intercourse with a divorced person

Uncleanness
Lustful, luxurious, shamelessly immoral or extravagant (loss of modesty)

Lasciviousnes
Knowing no boundries, usually with a sexual overtone, but can be broadened to other areas of life

Idolatry
The worship of false gods, however, it can be broadened to cover anything in your life that you put before God (family, job, hobbies, even church duties).

Witchcraft
From ”Farmekia” meaning the use or the administering of drugs or poisons. Also can be applied to but is not limited to the use of drugs and poisons in sorcery, magical arts, etc.

Hatred
This pretty much speaks for itself.

Variance
Contention or strife

Emulations
Jealousy

Wrath
Outbursts of anger

Strife
Selfish ambition

Seditions
Divisions (I wonder if this covers denominational boundries. . .)

Heresies
Believing that no one elses thoughts are equal to the caliber of your “group” or “cliché”

Envyings
The desire to have the physical belongings of others

Murders

Drunkenness

Revellings
Partying (whew, who knew this was in here??)

and such like:
Just in case anything was left out, scripture has a way of saying "Use your common sense!"

of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Getting deep, isn't it? Stew on this a bit and we'll look at the rest of this verse in our next edition.

See you next time,

Shawn

Who are you?

Many years ago, my family befriended a seasoned Evangelist that used to talk about how every church has the same people in it. They have different faces and different names, but they are the same people. As I began traveling as a preacher/singer, I noticed just how true this was. After a while, I could walk into a church and immediately tell who the trouble maker was, who the spiritual leader was, the prayer warrior, the hypocrite, etc.

As time passed and I became more seasoned of a minister (whether through music or scripture), I learned that these roles didn’t always remain the same. I’ve seen prayer warriors turn into gossips and spiritual leaders turn into pew sitters. Unfortunately, sometimes this results in churches who were once a beacon in their community becoming nearly desolate and definitely ineffective for God.

My challenge for you this week is to evaluate who you are in the church. What role are you playing?

Lost Person

New Convert

Backslider

Repentant Prodigal

Pew Sitter

Servant Leader

Gossip

Prayer Warrior

Defeated Christian

Victorious Overcomer

Trouble Maker

Peace Maker

Brown-noser

Encourager

Proud Snob

Joyful Greeter

Religious Hypocrite

Humble Servant

For each negative, there is a positive.You may have amazing talents that are being used in selfish ways. Who are you in the church, and what can you do to improve your relationship your relationship with God? Stay tuned as we look a little deeper at this next week.

Shawn

OVM Breaks the Barrier

One Voice Ministries is excited to announce that we have reached a milestone in our online ministry. Over the past 12 months we have had over 50,000 visitors (51,161). For the past several months we have watched as our annual total stayed in the 49,000 visitor range, but we just couldn't make it over the edge. This month we had nearly 4,300 visitors, which threw us over the barrier.

Thanks to everyone who helped us reach this goal. Now, let's see how quick we can hit 60k.

Shawn Howell
Director
One Voice Ministries/OVM Online

Make Up Your Mind

Several years ago as I was traveling home from a business trip, I somehow ended up behind an elderly gentleman in a small yellow car. The reason this man stood out to me was not because how he looked or what kind of car he drove, It wasn’t even the fact that he was 20 mph in an area that is usually going between 70 -80mph. This man stuck in my head because he was driving back and forth between the entire Interstate.

For those of you who have never traveled on I75 N out of Atlanta on a Friday at 4pm, let me just explain that this man was destined to be shot or shoved off the road by another car. Words and fingers were flying everywhere. It wasn’t pretty.

As I later thought back on the incident, I realized his problem wasn’t that he didn’t know where he came from or probably even where he was going. His problem was the he hadn’t made up his mind how he was going to get to his destination.

Just as this poor old man, you may also know where you came from and know where you are going. . .you may be able to point to the day and hour you got saved. You may have the certainty of eternal life, but have you decided how you are going to spend your journey.

SLOW LANE
Many folks in today’s church are traveling in the slow lane. They have asked Jesus to come into their heart, but that’s about it. They don’t do anything for the kingdom. They are safe and that’s about it.

MIDDLE LANE
I know allot of “Middle Lane” Christians. They usually attend church and pray, they may even serve in a position at church, but they lack passion. They just don’t have the personal intimate relationship with God that He so desires.

FAST LANE
“Fast Laners” are getting harder and harder to come by. These folks are on fire for God. They are saved, serving and have a relationship with God that other folks around them envy. It seems that they can talk to God just like He is sitting on their bed – an old friend. I’m not saying they are perfect, but they are very special and very rare in today’s society.

HOV LANE
For those of you who aren’t familiar with city driving, there is another lane. It’s called H.O. V. or High Occupancy Vehicle Lane. Basically it is a lane dedicated to folks who travel in groups. These are the soulwinners in our midst. These are the people that are always inviting people to Christ and to church with them. Unfortunately, HOV lanes are only faster because they have so few people that travel on them.

UNDECIDED
Some of you, like the man we talked about earlier, just hop around. You run in the fast lane for a little bit and then decide it’s too much commitment, so then you try the slow lane. The preacher says something that convicts you and you get back over in the fast lane for a little while, but it just doesn’t last.

As sad as it is to see Christian’s wasting their potential in the slow lane, God would rather you be in the slow lane than weaving.

Rev. 3:16 (KJV)
Because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.

Look at how The Message reads on this verse

You’re not cold, you’re not hot - far better to be either cold or hot! You are stale. You are stagnant. You make me want to vomit.

I am just on the healing end of a virus that seemed to last forever. At the tail end of it came a big wave of nausea. You know, there is nothing that is quiet as bad as nausea. It is the most miserable state you can be in. It's hard to believe that our lifestyle can actually make God feel this way.

As a Christian, we are seen as representatives of Christ. You are an Ambassador - like it or not. Every single action you take reflects on all of the body of Christ, influences the work of Christ and is seen by the lost.

Make up your mind and pick a lane.

Christians and Oprah

The power that Oprah Winfrey has on the women of American (even Christian women) has scared me for years. She has between 15-20 million viewers every day in 132 countries, slowly converting her viewers to her strong new age views. What scares me most about this, is that she has more influence over these women than their Pastors, Christian friends or even the Bible. Many ASSUME that she is a Christian (and boldy defend her), but I strongly question how anyone who calls themself a Christian can support her in any way - and yet they do time and time again. One of the most revealing examples of Oprah's false religion was a recent show with guests Betty Eadie, (new age/Mormon author of Embraced By The Light and The Awakening Heart), Dannion Brinkley (new age author of near death experience books Saved By The Light, and At Peace With in the Light) and Sophy Burnham (new age author of A Book of Angels and Angel Letters). During the show Oprah related, "I was raised a Baptist and we were too hung up on traditional ways. I was sitting in church and heard that God is a jealous God. I asked 'Why?' Come on-let's get over it!" She related a "jealous God" to an insecure God. In the program Oprah revealed that she doesn't think God is hung up on what you believe about God-whatever that "force" is, it doesn't care what you call it. He doesn't have an ego problem. She states, "I believe in the FORCE-I call it God." She also said if you believe in a rhythm of nature and in love, then you believe in God. On another show, a Christian in the audience challenged Oprah about being a "New Ager." Oprah responded, "I am not new age anything and I resent being called that. I am just trying to open a door so that people can see themselves more clearly and perhaps be the light to get them to God, whatever they may call that. I don't see spirits in the trees and I don't sit in the room with crystals." Oprah's close friend and sometimes guest, Shirley MacLaine described on a show how to meditate, going inside yourself, asking your own "intuitive Self" to seek answers to life's questions. Oprah responds, "You know, that is the same as the Bible says, 'Ask and it shall be given, seek and ye shall find'." Shirley confirms. Oprah then asks Shirley, "When you connected to the higher Self...knowing that you can do anything that you want to do-is it what other people describe as being 'born again'?" Shirley nods, "Yes, probably." Oprah, as with other New Agers, is not in pursuit and in communion with God but is in pursuit with the "image of God"-by elevating man to Divinity. The problem with this is the God of the universe has not called us to join ourselves to the creation but to Himself, "the Creator who is blessed forever". How can any Christian justify watching the Oprah Winfrey Show? I can't answer that. Anyone who can almost magically control massive numbers of women, and calls Jesus an "egotist" with nearly no publicity, should raise a flag as an instrument of Satan. Be careful who you idolize.

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2007.

Several years ago a dear friend of mine released an album entitled "New Road, Different Season". She had recently left the Mike Speck Quartet and taken a job as a Music Associate/Pianist of a church & she was at a new and uncharted point in her life. Her album touched me in a way that I cannot explain, and eventually, her prayerful decision led her to begin working with another friend of mine in an awesome music ministry. God has blessed her so greatly because of her obedience and faith in him since she took that initial move to leave the life she loved as a professional artist.

It often amazes me how God leads and directs our paths when we put our trust in Him. I've been in the same situation time and time again - and at every point, He shows that He is in complete control.

After years of working in retail, I followed God at the age of 23. I didn't know where I was going or what I was going to do, but I followed God. This move led to my employment with the Community Action Program in TN. This was the best move I had ever made in my life. I had been terrified of the change, but when I let go and followed God, everything worked out wonderfully.

Over a period of time we felt God's call on us to move to Georgia. Reluctant to leave a job I loved, but not wanting to disobey God, Angela and I followed - and now I work for an even better agency under the same program. It's amazing how God will work out the details in our lives if we will just step out in faith. We actually are not in control of as much as we think we are.

Why do I look back at these turning points in my life? Well, once again, we are facing another "season" in our lives. After much prayer and stress, we feel it is time for Angela to leave the world of employment to stay at home with our children. We are facing a great deal of change in our lives. Tremendous budget cuts, changes in our lifestyle and spending habits, etc. - but we know that these changes are for the spiritual well being of our children. Are we worried? I have to be honest, I'm human and I worry about these things, but I know God won't let us down. We are stepping out on faith into this new "uncharted season" as we face a new year. What is God dealing with you about this year? What "uncharted territory" has he been calling you to? Are you following? My challenge to you this year is to take the plunge. Go for the gold, and follow God.

Thank you for the nearly 50,000 hits we received in 2006. It is encouraging to see that this simple ministry is reaching folks.

I love you all,

Shawn

Christmas Update

One Voice Ministries would like to wish each and every one of you a happy and safe holiday season. From Thanksgiving to New Year and every day in between, we hope that you will remember our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as you decorate your homes, fight the retail crowds and participate in plays and musicals. There is no single event in the history of the world more important than the birth of Christ. Let's remember to keep Him at the center of this holiday season.

As 2007 dawns, Angela and I face a decision that will greatly impact our entire family. I do not anticipate this decision effecting any of the services of OVM other than a lack of personal finances that have covered most of the expenses of the ministry. We believe that God will continue to provide through this transition time and ask that you lift us up in prayer as we seek God's will and guidance in this matter.

Also, I would like to say that I am sorry for the lack of newsletters over the past two months. We have been VERY busy, but have two postings that should be up shortly after the first of the year. We will do our best to keep both OVM Online and OVM Tech News updated throughout the upcoming year.

In closing, let me thank you all for your support in our online ministry. In the past 12 months we have had over 45,000 hits and continue to grow. Correspondence has been received from all over the globe and we have even been recently recognized by a local web development company for our online ministry. It has been an exciting year, and we look forward to expanding our online ministry in 2007. If you have any suggestions or would like to help us in the maintenance or cost of OVM, feel free to contact us at admin@ovmonline.com.

Until next time

Shawn & Angela Howell

Shattered Innocence

There I was floating off the coast of Tybee Island. I didn't have a care in the world. I watched as ships passed by and kept an eye on my boys carrying buckets of sand and ocean water up the beach a little ways to make a castle. My wife was beside me enjoying the day as well. . .until. . .

someone shouted "Jellyfish"!!!!!!!

One moment I was in paradise - the next I was so cautious that I couldn't enjoy myself in the ocean. I was there for several days after this happened and never did relax as I had before that one moment.

After I returned to the beach house I couldnt' help but think about Adam and Eve. One moment life was wonderful, literally in paradise . . .until. . .

~~~~~Crunch~~~~~
God comes by for their daily walk and finds them hiding. Why where they hiding? Why were they ashamed of being naked? They had been naked every other day, during every other walk, but something had changed.  They gained a knowledge that changed their outlook on life.  No more was being naked natural, it was dirty.
Much of my life I've watched as people lost their virginity, started drinking, taking drugs, etc.  It's amazing how a face one's countenance can change once their innocence has been lost. The way they walk, talk, act, smile, etc. is forever changed because they experienced sin.
The Bible clearly tells us that if we want to be happy (blessed), we must not befriend the world and it's pleasured, but stay in God's word (Ps. 1:1). Once you start walking (walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly)to the world or advice, you get comfortable with them and sin becomes easier an easier.  You soon find yourself acting like them (standing in the way of sinners), and over time defending your sin (sitting in the seat of the scornful).
It's just not worth it.  If you want to be happy, steer clear of sin.  Once your innocence has been shattered you can never get it back.
~Shawn
An incounter with the President
Today I am writing from Atlanta, where only hours ago I was in the same building as President George W. Bush. Like him or not, it's always a neat experience to be in the same place as a President,  I even went up to the stage after everyone left to get a good look around.
The security was awesome.  I was told by Galleria Staff that the Secret Service had comed the building for three days previous to his arrival, examining every inch of the building - just to make sure everything was safe for his arrival.
When I first arrived at the Galleria, I walked past the fire trucks and Secret Service vehicles blocking the doors and into the lobby where dozens of Secret Service Agents, Galleria Security, Local Police, Deputies, Capitol Police (State and Federal) and other agency representatives eyed my every move.  The Galleria was locked down for several hours as Mr. Bush and the Govenor spoke - elevators turned off, Deputies and Local Police (some with bomb dogs) swept the halls constantly, every exit had multiple agents and police officers blocking them and every move anyone made was closely watched. Cameras were everywhere as the press tried to get every word and movement of Mr. Bush on film.  It was a pretty cool day to say the least.  But something troubled me.
We take such amazing steps to protect the President of the United States, yet when it comes to protecting even the name of our Lord, we are too ashamed.  While we do everything in our power to make sure that the message of or President is heard, we fail to tell the world about the most important message of all.  Yes, I have to admit that I have been guilty of sins of Omission as well, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.
Won't you join me in giving our God the glory, fame, respect, security & publicity He deserves?
Until next time,
~Shawn
A Changed Heart
I don't know how it happened, but somehow it did.  After several years of verbal abuse I found that I had grown cold in my heart towards her.  She was constantly pushing my buttons and said the meanest things.  My greatest hope was that she would fall off the face of the planet, but then it got worse.  No longer did she live hundreds of miles away. She purchased a home less than a mile from my own.  The sickness in my stomach was constant.  My heart was wounded.  I blamed every problem in my life on her and the trauma that she left in her wake. I had prayed diligently, but to no avail.  I just could not get over all of the mean things she had done and said to me.  Suddenly something in my heart changed.  I found myself driving by her home every day.  At first I didn't know why I felt so compelled to do this.  It wasn't the shortest route to work, but for some reason I had to drive past her house.  One morning I realized that I was praying for her as I stopped in front of her house.  I didn't even do it on purpose, it was almost instinctive. Somehow my cold heart was gone.  I didn't hate this woman anymore, I feared for her lost soul. I still haven't talked to her in over two years.  She hasn't replied to my letters asking for forgiveness, but that's ok.  I have forgiven her. As I now drive by that little house evewry morning I stop at the corner and look in that direction as I say a small heartfelt prayer for the soul of Patsy.
The Unexpected Encounter
Today I received an email that threw me off just a little bit.  I get dozens (if not hundreds) of emails every day, but one in particular stood out.
It all started last week when I decided to purchase a light switch cover for my son's Mickey Mouse bedroom on Ebay.  I am a regular Ebay nerd and usually find pretty good deals online.  This time, it seems, that I found more than I bargained for.
I received confirmation that my product shipped and then another email from the vendor.  It read:
"Hello, I just felt moved to say HI and thank you for being in the Ministries. I am so fearful for those that will be left behind and believe that will be very soon.
I don't know why I needed to write this to you. I just felt led to and I hope that you know that I get excited when I cross paths with fellow Christians. "
I purchased a $5 light plate and received a blessing. Sometimes it seems that we are alone in the battle, but then God reminds us that there are many out there fighting alongside us - although we may never meet in person in this lifetime. Thank you, God, for this little reminder.
Until next time,
~Shawn
The Davinci Code
I just finished listening to the audiobook for "The Davinci Code" and have to admit that I was somewhat surprised. I am not sure exactly what I was expecting, but I found the book to be basically an analytical version of "Raiders of the Lost Ark".  The big secret of the book was that Jesus Christ and Mary M. were married and had children together. While I do agree that this viewpoint is heresy, I didn't find the content of this book to be nearly as bad as other books (or movies).  I don't know why this book was targeted so strongly by the Christian population while others were left alone.  In my oppinion, Harry Potter is a bigger threat to our society.  Funny how the Christian community just refuses to say anything against that series - isn't it?
Anyway. . it is a good mystery, but wouldn't recommend it due to the teaching of false doctrine.  It could have been better had he focused the story on another subject.  Watch National Treasure instead.  It's pretty much the same thing minus the blasphemy.
~Shawn
How Big Is God
There's an old song that I have loved for many years that I'm sure many of you are familiar with.  "How big is God" is such an awesome description of the vastness and wonder of God.
One of my greatest fears over the past several years has been the teaching of the friendship theology and humanization of God by many churches today.  Yes, I believe it is important to teach that Jesus became man in order to pay the debt of our sin, but we must not forget the fact that He is still an amazing and Holy God!
This afternoon as I took some time to float in the waves of Tybee Island, Georgia, I layed looking out to the vastness of the ocean and, as I always do when at the beach, thought of how far it is to the next peice of land.  It is quiet an amazing thought. . . and ever greater still is to think about the God that created this huge ocean. "He's big enough to rule the mighty universe, yet small enough to live within my heart."
Until next time,
Shawn
How to grow a happy child
1. Be a good husband/wife.
If you are married, have a more active relationship with your spouse than you do with your children. Spend more time in the roles of husband and wife than you do as mother and father. Nothing causes a child greater insecurity than sensing that his parent's marriage is not the most solid, permanent thing in his life, and vice versa.
2. Have an active life outside of parenting.
If you are single, do not be married to your children. Have an active life outside of your role as mother/father. Be an interesting person to your kids. The well-being of a single parent is essential to the well-being of his/her children.
3. Expect your children to obey
Expect this calmly as you take their obedience for granted. Who is the happier employee: the one who frequently attempts to get away with breaking the rules or the one who obeys the rules? Substitute child for employee and the answer is the same. Disobedient children are not happy campers. Said another way, the most obedient children are the happiest.
4. Expect your children to be responsible.
Expect your children to be responsible citizens of your family. From the time they are 3 years old, assign them chores to do around the home, chores that mean something. You may find yourself surprised when you see your children actually take pride in their tasks.
5.Teach your children that happiness is not a matter of how much you have.
It is so important that our children understand that material things are not what is important in life. They need to know that family, spiritual closeness with God & helping others is where the true riches in life lie. This MUST be done from an early age, and must be reinforced over and over by parents, because everything in this world tells them otherwise.
6. Let television and video games have very little impact in your children's lives.
Am I saying that they should have NO contact with this type of media? Not at all, but both should be screened, monitored and limited.
7. Help your children develop hobbies.
Whether it's as simple as working on a train set or as complex as learning a musical instrument, it is very important that your child get involved in something that will help them define their talents.  Experiment in different areas to allow the child to find something that really excites them. Most importantly, do it TOGETHER!
8. Teach your children good manners.
There is nothing as impressive and respected than a person with good manners.  In a world where everyone is concerned with what they can get out of everything, manners teach your children to respect the thoughts and feelings of others, and is greatly sought after, even in secular jobs.
9. Stay rooted in Scripture
It is so important that your children know from BIRTH that the Bible is not just a historical book, a collection of stories, a book of morality or even A way to God.  You must teach them by reading AND LIVING God's Word regularly and consistantly.
What's the big fuss about Narnia? (Updated)
I just finished reading the "Narnia" series, and have to admit that it has changed my outlook on life.  I would never have imagined that a series of children's books could have this impact on me, but it did.
From the moment I began reading about Lucy's first entrance into the great land, I was captivated and engrossed into this story.  It wasn't long until I realized I was halfway through the series, and felt as if I was living out the adventures myself.
I had read the first book, but barely remembered the story line.  When the movie was released, my Pastor decided to read the book the children in the church, watch the movie with them, and then discuss the spiritual aspects of the book.  We spoke of this on the way to Nashville last year and my mind became intrigued with the series.  I didn't understand why he was so excited about the books.
Finally, a few months ago, I decided I would download the audio book and listen to it as I traveled to Savannah on business. I started the long drive with "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" and had nearly finished it by the time I arrived at my motel. I was so excited that I took my Ipod in the room that night and finished the book. I then rented the Pay-Per-View movie the next night. I was hooked.  Aslan,. . .even the mention of his name demands respect in my mind now. What an awesome picture of our Lord and Savior.
If you haven't read this series of books, or haven't read them in years, I encourage you to pick them up and let these words fill your heart with gladness and revitalize your Christian walk. As exciting and moving as the book is, the greatest moment is in the last chapter of the last book - I won't ruin the story line, except to say that I was shouting on my way over the mountain as I listened to this audiobook. As the story finished, I could do nothing but pray for the rest of the journey home. WOW!
My favorite book remains "The Magician's Nephew", partly because it explains where the witch, the lamp post, and even the warddrobe come from, but my favorite part of any of the books was in "The Horse and His Boy". As the boy walks in the darkness, hearing someone beside him, he trembles with fear. There is no communication for some time, he can only hear the breath.  He finally speaks to the one that is beside him and learns that it is, in fact, Aslan.  At this point, he doesn't know Aslan, and is terribly afraid of lions, but this lion is different.  It silently walked to the boys right on the journey. Later, when the boy returns to this area during daylight, he learns that he was walking beside a great cliff and that Aslan was walking beside him in the darkness to keep him from falling. What an amazing spiritual picture.
I did some research after reading the first book on which order I should read the series. While many arguments were found on whether to read in chronological order, or by publishing date, I found my own order and suggest it strongly.
I recommend reading in the following order:
1. The Lion, The Witch, & the Wardrobe (introduction to Narnia and the characters)
2. The Magician's Nephew (The origin of Narnia, the witch, etc. - but not to be read first)
4. The Horse and His Boy (This book will make Prince Caspian more understandable)
5. Prince Caspian (The last adventure in Narnia for Peter and Susan)
6. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Edward & Lucy's last adventure, introduction of Eustice)
7. The Silver Chair (Adventures of Eustice & his friend, Edward & Lucy's Cousin)
8. The Last Battle (The last book - AWESOME!!)
ENJOY!!
<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ovmonline.blogspot.com/2006/06/whats-big-fuss-about-narnia-updated.html' title='What's the big fuss about Narnia? It was (and always will be) the church of my dreams, but the long drive to church (around an hour) made it difficult to stay involved around both of our schedules, so we decided to look around for something a little closer to home.
I began thinking back to all of the churches I had visited in my travels as a singer/preacher.  My memories always reflected a church full of smiling people meeting me at the door wanting to help carry equipment, shake my hand, or give me food. It seems, however, when we walked in the door as just another person (and not a guest preacher or singer), nobody acknowledged our existance.  it was almost as if we were invisible as we walked into many of these churches.  In many cases, not even the Pastor shook our hand. Let me tell you that my oppinions of some of these churches changed drastically in this period.
It's very easy to want to treat a visiting minister or singer with respect and give them special treatment, but we have to remember that they are no more important than the poor man that walked in at the last minute on the back row. Our hand of fellowship just may be the thing that keeps someone from going to Hell.  Join OVM this month as we make a special effort to notice every visitor, not just the ones that are being featured in the service.
Church Volunteers
Every church depends, at least in some capacity, on volunteers. In most churches you can find volunteers in the nursery, media booth, choir, etc. These special people usually put more of their lives into the ministry of the church than the church staff - especially considering that the time they give is in addition to their jobs.
As a minister it is often easy to take advantage of these people and treat them as part of the church staff, but we must remember that their giving is a sacrifice unto God. When volunteers find themselves without the tools they need to do the job required - or they are treated without the respect they deserve,the will most likely find another place to go and another church to serve in.
I urge you to love your volunteers.  Don't just tell them you appreciate them, show them.  Give them the tools they need to do the job right, remember, the job they do is for the King of Kings.  Treat them as His servants. Help them to do their jobs to the best of their capabilities - and listen to their needs.
OVM News - May 2006
Shawn's Two Cents
I hope everyone is enjoying the new format. It is a great deal easier to manage and pulls in a whole new audience. I have received correspondence from folks that normally would not visit our web page and believe that this new format is an awesome new opportunity of ministry for OVM.
Please continue to keep my friend in your prayers as she fights to get away from her abusive husband. As threats and irrational behavior have come into play from him over the past several days against anyone that knows her, she is once again scared for her well being and that of her family. After all, he is a well trained and decorated marine. I guess they aren't that picky over who that honor now days.
Oh well, have a great weekend and hopefully you will hear more from us next week.
Devotion of the Month
I am a busy man. I live a busy life. I have a busy job, a busy church, and a busy family life. I feel at times that if I stop, the universe will fall apart. While I know this is not so in my heart, I have been going full power for so long that life tends to brainwash me to believe this.
While visiting Tybee this month, I took some time just to walk and listen to what God had to say to me. No deadlines, no prayer requests, no family to tend to - just me and God. As I walked the entire length of the island twice (from and then back to my motel), I enjoyed the time of silence. I could see the world living around me, but somehow I just felt like I was no thing more than an observer. I saw children chasing the waves, teenagers flirting with each other (I'm sure I was never that obvious), couples enjoying their time together, and parents putting their babies in the water for the first time. In the distance I could see people working their jobs, trying to earn money to take care of their families. I saw the world going on, but me - I just didn't feel a part of it.
Dr. Dobson of Focus on the Family once spoke of his daughter's hamster.  He said that he would watch as the little hamster would try dilligently to escape the little cage while the family dog sat below the cage licking it's lips.  The hamster was living it's life, trying to get what he could out of it all, not thinking about the unseen dangers that lie before him.
This pretty much sums up how I felt as I walked along the beach.  For once, I was the one that was simply watching life go by.  In that moment, God spoke to me as he hasn't in a long time.  Maybe it was because for once I was silent. I didn't try to do all the talking, all I did was listen.  Won't you try this month to spend some quiet time with God.  Don't talk, just listen.
Web Page of the Month
www.fbcvision.com
We have been working on a new web page for our home church (First Baptist of Blairsville, Ga) for some time now and are proud to finally be able to present it to the public. A 15 year old girl spoke out about her experience with Harry Potter and how she was sucked into the Wiccan religion due to her school teaching from the Harry Potter books. She asked that the books be removed from the school , yet all of the teachers and many parents spoke out against her. "These books make children read." was spoken over and over again.
When Angela and I first moved to Blairsville, I witnessed the grip of Satan over the school system as I worked part time as a substitute teacher. As teacher after teacher began telling me that my remarks against the witch books were not appreciated and that there was nothing wrong with the books because they make kids read I was HORRIFIED. How could these "Christian" people teach such material?
Let's look back at the news report.  What ifthis child had been converted to Christianity from Islam or any other religion that is accepted by our society by teachers using the Bible as reading material in class - making the statement that it ruined he life? It would be immediately banned from the classroom and nobody would dare stand up in defense.  After all, the Bible shouldn't be in school anyway (isn't that what they say?).
Don't be confused by the rambling radio announcers. . . the books are not just in the library, THEY ARE TAUGHT FROM IN THE CLASSROOM and TEACHERS ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO READ THESE BOOKS WHICH ENDORSE WITCHCRAFT!! I have seen it myself. OUR SCHOOLS ARE INFESTED and TEACHERS ARE BRAINWASHED. . even many of the ones you sit next to in church. I have seen classrooms decorated with Harry Potter junk, many teachers even have Harry Potter screensavers and themes on their computers, and yet we do absolutely nothing. Oh, we will stand against those who try to take God out of the constitution and remove the Ten Commandments from the courthouse, but we don't do anything to try to remove Satan from the schools.  We are a sad people.
I preached against Harry Potter once in my own church. When I made the statement that Witchcraft was being accepted in our schools, a gasp filled the church.  You could hear a pin drop.  Most people turned me off then.  Brainwashed!
What is the hold that Harry Potter has on our schools, our teachers. . our children? Satan is in charge and witchcraft is alive and well. It isn't a game, or a fun fantasy . . it is real, and it is taking over the next generation of children. Many of our children will go to Hell because of these teachings and the teachers that defend them. Is it enough that children are reading? Does content make any difference? It does to me. Maybe you are a teacher reading this, angry at my post. My only question to you is how many children have you sent to Hell?  God help us all!
shawn
Domestic Violence up close and personal
Every day I deal with battered women - and every day my heart breaks at how much damage can be done by a man trying to compensate for his inadequacies. Every day I watch women who have battled abuse for years, some who have even watched as they were powerless to stop abuse of their children. I've seen broken jaws, arms, legs, and most of all, spirits.
I have always had a heart for Domestic Violence, and have always been very careful in counseling these broken souls - trying to make them understand that they are special, beautiful, deserving and capable of living a happy and prosperous life. It is very hard to convince a woman that the man that she loves, and that she THINKS loves her, is really just using her to fufill his need for control, but I have seen so many come through.
This month all of my training, experience & education in this area became personal as I watched a dear friend that I love dearly escape from a tyrant. I had felt that things were heading in this direction, but it had progressed much faster than I had even imagined. Hearing the things that he had done were no different from what I hear everyday, except that it was someone I cared about being abused. Even as I write this, I must fight back the tears that have plagued me for around a week now.
If you are a woman or man living in an abusive relationship, I beg of you to protect yourself and your family from the agony that you are going through. You can live without him, it isn't your fault, and there are people out there with resorces and the heart to help you get started on your new life.
